Beyond Between, Bemused AIS Teacher Librarian Conference June 19 2009 ~ The Powerhouse Museum Sydney
Keynote Speaker: Peter FitzSimons Journalist, broadcaster, author, speaker, former Wallaby, - a really entertaining speech on the importance of story and in particular how Peter found the right way to tell the stories that matter to him. His method reminded me of Leonard Sax who says: draw boys into reading by starting 'in media res' - in the middle or with the action. . Peter credits American writer Gary Smith with teaching him how to pull a reader right into the story.
Venue: Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. Great venue - easy to get to from all over Sydney; excellent theatre with high quality facilities & just right for the group size (50-60) ; opportunity to preview exhibts of interest ; refreshments & facilities nearby; excellent catering ; interesting shop with books & more.I also learned that the Powerhouse has terrific digital resources, including creative commons licensed pictures in their flickr collection. and PHm is also on Facebook..
No Man is an Island by Gary Smith (about David Duval as quoted by P Fitz) April 1999

Melanie Hughes, AIS: A smorgasbord of the latest ICT applications for TLs. This was a great session. Melanie shared a carefully chosen selection of the many Web2.0 applications currently available. AIS have a great wiki for ICT PD and Melanie directed us to a Teacher Librarian page with links to the items mentioned on the day (Glogster for one!) (There is also a 10 min highlight version of the very long introduction to Google Wave - an exciting prospect for keeping track of one's online prescence in one place.)
The STARTLING Tale of HAMLET Prince of Denmark A Monologue Told in Verse with Magical Illusions Written & Performed by Geoffrey McSkimming (with additional dialogue by William Shakespeare)
Guided Inquiry Update from Lee (AKA NSW TL of the Year) Notice of a guided inquiry day to be held on Tues 17th August.
